The average salary of a Premier League footballer has more than doubled in the last four years, according to a new report.
SportingIntelligence.com claims that, on average, a player in the English top flight earns £1.5m a year, compared to £646,000 in 2006.
Eurosport report that Manchester City strikers Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor are believed to be the highest earners, each taking home more than £7m a year.
Chelsea’s John Terry and Frank Lampard, along with Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, are the top-earning Englishmen, bringing in £6.5m.
The figures show that the increase in television revenues has also benefited players in the lower leagues.
The average salary for a Championship player is £250,000, while League One and League Two players can expect to bring in £80,000 and £65,000 a year respectively.
Football Supporters' Federation chairman Malcolm Clarke questions whether the wage rises are justified at a time when so many clubs are struggling financially.
"There's been a huge rise in the amount of media money coming in but it's all going to players,” he said.
"Last season, the extra TV money clubs got was enough for them to have let every fan into every Premier League game free, extraordinary as that sounds. Yet season ticket prices went up, not down.
"I think it's hard to blame the individual players. Who wouldn’t take a pay rise if their boss offered them one?
"But there has been some quite appalling financial mismanagement in football recently, so something needs to be done.
"Football must live within its means like the rest of us."
