Russia’s deputy prime minister Alexander Zhukov is to become the country’s new Olympic chief.
Zhukov, described as the Government’s “point man” for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, will replace Leonid Tyagachyov as president of the Russian Olympic Committee. Tyagachyov resigned following Russia’s worst-ever showing at a Winter Games in Vancouver in February.
"Zhukov is the only candidate," Sochi Games chief Dmitry Chernyshenko revealed, adding Zhukov would be appointed ROC president on May 20 but would also remain as head of Sochi's supervisory board.
"It is a unique model of a lack of conflict of interest," Chernyshenko said.
Meanwhile, the International Olympic Committee declared itself happy with Sochi’s preparations for the 2014 Games, but warned that there was still much to be done.
"We are happy to see the progress – mainly in the field of construction," Gilbert Felli, the IOC's Games executive director said.
"But this project is a huge project. The timing is always something we are scrutinising very carefully. We are happy with the deadlines but there is still a lot to do.”
