Leicester head of operations Simon Cohen believes the salary cap limit needs to be raised substantially to enable English rugby clubs to compete with their European rivals.
Cohen warned that the domestic game is at a “crossroads” and said: “The Premiership has to decide where it wants to be as a league. Is it going to work to the lowest common denominator and be competitive [within an English context]? Or, is it more important to compete in Europe and attract the best players?
“If it is the former, a salary cap of £4m is appropriate. If it is the latter, you have to spend about £12-14m. It is up to the league to decide in which direction it wants to go.”
The 12 Guinness Premiership clubs will vote on whether to increase the annual playing budget with effect from the 2011/12 season in a formal vote on May 18.
