Sochi 2014 organisers have a “Plan B” in case of a repeat of the weather problems that hit this year’s Vancouver Winter Olympics.
Unseasonably warm weather led to a lack of snow in Canada in February but president and chief executive of Sochi 2014 Dmitry Chernyshenko insisted that his team has a back-up plan for the next Games.
“We have learnt from what happened in Vancouver this year and we have ensured we have a Plan B in place during the course of the Winter Games,” he said.
"We've learnt a lot from the situations that affected Vancouver. For the first time in 126 years there was summer during the Winter Games.
"These are serious issues for the world at large, but we have a Plan B and that includes storing considerable amounts of snow at least a year in advance should we be faced with a similar situation as Vancouver did this year. We will also protect the slopes and manage the venue in a better way in a lead up to the Games.”
Chernyshenko said everything was on track for construction to begin as early as August this year.
"The aim is to have the venues ready and running by the end of 2012 so that there is adequate time to do testing,” he added.
