More than half of the 500,000 World Cup tickets that went on sale in the fifth and final phase remain unsold just a month before the tournament starts, it has emerged.
Fifa spokeswoman Delia Fischer confirmed that 230,000 of the 500,000 phase five tickets – the first to be available over the counter – had been sold.
The tickets went on sale in South Africa on April 15 and there were initially long queues with 130,000 sold in the first three days. However, that early demand appears to be waning.
Greg Fredericks, who heads World Cup local organising committee chief executive Danny Jordaan's office, had earlier told Johannesburg city councillors that close to 90 per cent of the total tickets for the tournament had been sold.
