Insurers cover $5bn of World Cup risks
 11/05/2010

Insurance companies have sold policies covering $5bn worth of risks linked to this summer’s World Cup.

World governing body Fifa, national organisers, travel firms, broadcasters, sponsors and advertising agencies have all taken out policies against cancellation or disaster.

"The worst-case scenario would be a terror attack at the opening ceremony in a stadium with several thousand dead," Hans J.R. Steffen, special risks specialist at the world’s second-biggest ‘reinsurer’ Swiss Re, told Reuters.

Sabine Bach, head of contingency risk at the world's largest reinsurer Munich Re, added: "If the television screens were blank, that would be bad."
