International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) president Lamine Diack has announced he plans to stand for re-election next year.
Diack took over as president in November 1999 after the sudden death of Primo Nebiolo. He had told delegates when he was re-elected in 2007 that it would be the last time he would seek election.
He now claims he has been urged to continue in the role, which would see him remain in charge for the London 2012 Olympics, which coincide with the centenary of the founding of the IAAF.
Diack’s departure was expected to spark an election involving Lord Coe, the 1980 and 1984 Olympic 1500 metres champion and now London 2012 chairman, Ukrainian pole vault world record holder Sergey Bubka and possibly Nawal El Moutawakel, the 1984 Olympic 400m hurdles champion who is now a senior member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, Coe has stated previously that he will not stand against Diack.
Diack will be 78 when the election is held next year in South Korea – the venue for the 2011 World Championships.
