West Ham United is understood to be holding talks with entertainment giant AEG about presenting a joint bid to take over the Olympic Stadium after the 2012 London Games.
The Daily Telegraph reports that central to the West Ham proposal, which will go to the Olympic Park Legacy Company on Friday (May 14), is keeping the whole of the stadium but reconfiguring it with more spacious seating to reduce the capacity from 80,000 during the Games to about 60,000.
However, the newspaper adds that if the negotiations break down, West Ham has already agreed a powerful deal with the local borough, Newham, to provide a comprehensive year-round Olympic venue for a range of community activities.
The athletics track will be retained and it is also understood that Essex County Cricket Club has been approached about staging Twenty20 matches at the venue.
"It seems a waste of taxpayers’ money to tear two-thirds of it down – we want to try and leave it as untouched as possible," a West Ham spokesman told the Telegraph.
Lease details and costings of such a move to the Olympic Park are still to be finalised.
However, the latest move by West Ham to talk to AEG, the operators of The O2 arena, aims to ensure its submission is as comprehensive as possible and includes entertainment as part of the deal.
"We don't want a white elephant,” the spokesman added. “London wants the greatest Games and we want to help it provide the greatest legacy and create this centre of sport, education and culture that everyone is proud of and makes the best use of taxpayers' money.”
