The British economy would be boosted by £3.2bn if England hosts the 2018 World Cup, according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers.
In a letter to the Daily Telegraph, a group of business leaders – including Lord Alan Sugar and British Airways chief executive Willie Walsh – cited a PwC study that calculated the tournament would provide a "net positive impact of £3.2bn to the economy in the summer of 2018".
"It will create revenue and jobs, helping to transform communities in many cities," the letter said. "It will open up opportunities for young people to learn about teamwork, competitiveness with integrity and other skills needed in business.
"England would host a commercially successful World Cup. Maximum ticket revenue is guaranteed, as demonstrated by huge crowds every week at Premier League and Football League stadiums, while communities from every global national team live here and are ready to welcome their countrymen."
Each country must present their bid books to Fifa on Friday (May 14), with technical inspections due between July and September, and the final vote by Fifa's executive committee on December 2.
