Major League Baseball team the New York Mets is in talks with the New York Islanders about building the National Hockey League franchise an arena in Queens.
“We’ve had discussions with the Islanders – in addition to those we have had with Major League Soccer – about building a sports/entertainment facility near Citi Field,” the Mets said in an emailed statement.
Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon has reportedly talked with Islanders owner Charles Wang about creating a hockey arena that is “synergistic” with Citi Field. Wilpon also confirmed it is possible he could buy the Islanders.
The Islanders play in the 37-year-old Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, New York. The team has been trying to work with local government to approve a development plan for a new venue.
The Mets moved into Citi Field in the Queens borough of New York last year.
