Rugby Football Union president John Owen is hoping the change of government will lead to a rethink on the controversial sports rights ruling.

Regulator Ofcom has ordered BSkyB to reduce the wholesale price at which it sells Sky Sports 1 and 2 to rivals such as BT and Virgin Media. Governing bodies, including the RFU, fear this would dramatically reduce revenues going into grassroots sport.

"It would affect us from top to bottom, and other sporting bodies as well," Owen told BBC Gloucestershire. "We await the policy agenda but I know the FA [Football Association] are also concerned. We are working with them to put our case.

"The Conservatives were clear pre-election that they would retain the status quo and look at the powers of Ofcom. We are quite comforted by that. If we lose these revenue streams, we will not be able to invest in the grassroots level of the game in the way that we would like."
