Major League Baseball (MLB) commissioner Bud Selig has admitted he is concerned by the delay in the proposed sale of the Texas Rangers.
Speaking to reporters after an owners meeting last week, Selig said that the ownership situation at the Rangers is a worry for both the franchise and its fans.
Tom Hicks last month admitted his own concerns over the proposed sale of his Rangers franchise to the Rangers Baseball Express consortium. Hicks Sports Group’s 40 creditors, thought to be owed $525m, are holding up the sale over fears they may lose more than $30m in the deal.
Hicks reached an agreement in January with Pittsburgh lawyer Chuck Greenberg, whose group includes current team president Nolan Ryan, but little progress has been made since then.
Selig said: “It needs to be completed as expeditiously as possible – underscoring and underlining expeditiously. I'm concerned about the length of time it has taken. I'm concerned both for the franchise and its fans.”
