Fifa calls in Interpol over Triesman allegations
 21/05/2010

Fifa has asked Interpol to look into claims allegedly made by former Football Association chairman Lord Triesman that Russia and Spain were involved in a plot to bribe referees at this year’s World Cup.

Jérôme Valcke, Fifa’s general secretary, said that Triesman's comments, which caused his resignation from England's 2018 World Cup bid, were "regrettable" and "sad" but added that Fifa had a duty to investigate.

"We will go through everything that [Triesman] has said to see if there is any truth in his words," Valcke told the Daily Telegraph. "The ethics committee must find out if there are any grounds to these allegations, to investigate what he said about Russia, Spain and match-fixing. We will study it both in content and form.”

World football’s governing body has called in the international police organisation Interpol in an attempt to put any corruption allegations to bed before the start of the World Cup in South Africa on 11 June. A hotline has also been set up to allow coaches or players to report any suspected foul play.

"We are working with Interpol to check what is behind this story," Valcke continued. "You could never say that Fifa are doing nothing about match-fixing. We cannot go to the World Cup with the feeling that something is going on there.

“We will do everything to have a system where every player and every coach can call a number to say that a player has been approached or that money has been offered.

"I hope we can guarantee that nothing of this kind happens at the World Cup. There cannot be another story that comes out about match-fixing. We have to stop this at once. The World Cup is the most important asset we have."
