Retail giant Spar Group has signed a deal with the Botswana Netball Association (BONA) to sponsor its league.
The three-year deal is thought to be the biggest-ever netball sponsorship and will see the competition rebranded as the Spar Good-For-You Netball League.
BONA president Tebogo Lebotse explained that the sponsorship money would help the league comply with international standards.
She said: “It will be the first time we use pole protectors at our games, and although we have not been practising this, it is an international requirement that poles be cushioned to avoid possible injuries.”
Another initiative that will be introduced with the new league sponsorship, she added, will be the branding of umpires. Unlike before, the match officials will be provided with standard officiating uniform to add colour and consistency at the matches.
“We will also invest in the administration of the games,” she continued. “We used to focus our sponsorship money more on prizes for the teams, but this time we also want to ensure that people tasked with the running of the games are covered to ensure necessary motivation and smooth running of the games.”
