Triesman allegations not taken seriously in Spain
 24/05/2010

Spain’s secretary of state for sport claims the country has not taken Lord Triesman’s alleged bribery comments seriously.

Triesman stood down as chairman of the English Football Association and England’s 2018 World Cup bid after apparently suggesting that Spain had asked for Russia’s help to bribe referees at this year’s World Cup in return for supporting the Russian bid to host the 2018 tournament.

But Jaime Lissavetzky told Reuters: "I read about it and I simply had to smile.

"How could anyone in their right mind think that Spain, a democratic country, could do such things? We didn't attach much importance to it."

Lissavetzky, who is half Ukrainian, added: "Everyone has the right to make a mistake. I know that he [Triesman] sent a letter to the Spanish and Portuguese federations [who are making a joint bid for the 2018 World Cup] apologising. Nothing more needs to be said.

"The only thing I would ask is for fair play [in the 2018 bidding process]. We, of course, show respect to the other bids. We have always played fair here in Spain."
