Football League matches enjoyed their highest crowds for 50 years, with more than 17 million people attending games this season.
The BBC reports that the figure was a 4.4 per cent increase on the previous year's total with an average crowd of more than 10,000 fans at each match across all three divisions.
The Championship, which had a 0.3 per cent gain, is still the fourth most popular division in Europe behind England, Germany and Spain's top-flights.
Meanwhile, League One crowds rose by almost 21 per cent to an average of 9,136 per game.
The last time attendances were so high was the 1959/60 season, when a total of 18,064,859 passed through the turnstiles.
