The French Open could relocate to the site of Disneyland Paris if organisers cannot redevelop Roland Garros.
Tournament director Gilbert Ysern revealed that Plan A is to build two new stadiums with retractable roofs within the existing park as part of a modernisation that would cost an estimated 200m Euros.
But relocation, which would cost about three times as much, is also a possibility, with the site of Disneyland, Marne-le-Vallée, among the options.
Officials argue that Roland Garros’s 19.8 acres – the smallest of the four major international championship sites – must be expanded to avoid potential loss of fan and player interest caused by cramped facilities.
“It’s not a game for us,” said Ysern. “It’s something very serious.
“We want to be the most beautiful tournament in the world. We want Roland Garros to be the strongest tournament in the world.”
