Newly elected president of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Alexander Zhukov wants chess added to the Olympic programme.
The Associated Press quotes Zhukov as saying: "Regrettably, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) doesn't want to add the sport to the Olympic programme, but we will insist on it.”
Zhukov headed Russia's chess federation from 2003 to 2009. He said chess deserves inclusion in the Olympic programme because of its global popularity.
