Hull City is looking to agree a deal with the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) to slash the club’s first-team wages before the salaries have to be paid on Friday (May 28).
The cash-strapped club needs to find more than £3m to cover May’s wage bill, but talks have been taking place aimed at reducing that amount by about £1m.
Chairman and owner Russell Bartlett wants his squad to defer about 30 per cent of their wages for the next three months.
The move would give Hull some much-needed breathing space as it battles debts of almost £40m.
Senior PFA executive Richard Jobson said: “We have a verbal agreement with the club and once we have received confirmation in writing we can put that to players.
“We had a very constructive meeting with the club last week and our advisors are happy with the reassurances given.
“We will recommend to the players they accept the deal. It’s taken longer than we expected but hopefully things are going to move in the next day or so.”
