Portuguese legend Eusebio has turned his back on his own country’s bid to co-host the 2018 World Cup with Spain by lending his support to England.
"To have the World Cup back in England would be very good for football,” he told the Daily Mirror. "Your country has a massive history in the game, a lot of tradition and a lot of passion.
"The Premier League is the hardest league in the world right now – it has a lot of big players.
"You have also got good infrastructure, good conditions and if the World Cup was to be organised as well as it was back in 1966, then it will be a great tournament."
Meanwhile, Fifa vice-president Jack Warner has hailed Geoff Thompson’s appointment as England bid chairman following Lord Triesman’s departure.
"Geoff Thompson is a member of the Fifa executive committee, so that should help England's bid,” said Warner, as quoted by the Morning Star.
"He is close to the people who are going to be voting, so that has got to be a good thing.
"The FA dealt with everything [the Triesman scandal] promptly, so that has also been a good thing."
