Great Britain Basketball has opted out of bidding for the temporary arena which will house the 2012 Olympic basketball tournament.
The Daily Telegraph reports that GB Basketball has instead put in a tender to the Olympic Legacy Company (OLC) for Arena 3, a permanent venue in Olympic Park which will be hosting the handball tournament in 2012.
“We considered our options and decided not to bid for the temporary stadium,” performance director Chris Spice said.
“The 2012 legacy for basketball has to be an enhanced and more permanent status for the sport as we look to major competitions beyond the London Olympics.
“The 2012 basketball arena is very good but has always been earmarked as a temporary structure and we are much more interested in putting in our bid to OLC for Arena 3.
“And we are not the only ones because it is an excellent facility. I understand handball and boxing are definitely interested and possibly others as well.
“Arena 3 is a venue which would be an ideal base for the whole GB set-up – training and playing. It could be an important launch pad for the sport and, looking down the line, if we are going to bid for tournaments like Eurobasket 2015 we need our own base as well as brilliant occasional facilities like the O2.
“We would also be looking to install a London team to compete at the venue in the British Basketball League. London sides have sometimes been ill-starred in the competition to date, with a suitable venue being one of the main problems, but there is huge interest in the capital and we need to get a London franchise well established.”
