Lancashire country cricket club chief executive Jim Cumbes has issued a stark warning to his peers after claiming an English county club could go bankrupt.
Lancashire announced a post-tax loss of £546,000 for 2009 in a year where the club missed out on hosting a Test match or 50-over international.
The Old Trafford club is around £8million in debt and is currently undergoing £32million worth of ground maintenance.
Lancashire, who have only posted losses twice in the past 22 years, is hosting the second Test between England and Bangladesh today.
“Without a doubt [a county club could soon become bankrupt],” Cumbes told reporters yesterday.
“And it won't be a small one, it will be a big one. It's always possible. Yorkshire has a lot of debt at Headingley, Durham are in a lot of debt, we are in debt.
“Some grounds more than others cannot afford what is being asked. Trent Bridge's staging agreement (with the ECB) finishes next year, they're frightened to death, because they have no other source of income but cricket yet have a ground they've got to maintain.”
