The threat of a terrorist attack at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi is very real and credible, according to Russia’s chief of state security.
Alexander Bortnikov, the chief of the FSB, the main successor to the Soviet-era KGB, intimated that Islamic groups close to the country’s North Caucasus region, may try to carry out a plot near the Black Sea resort.
Russia is facing a problem with insurgents in the area having experienced trouble in the neighbouring regions of Dagestan and Ingushetia.
"Threats from al Qaeda were the reason for the cancellation of the Dakar 2008 road race... Militant leaders have clearly expressed their intention to play out a similar scenario on the eve of the 2014 Olympics," the state-run RIA news agency quoted Bortnikov as saying.
Russian security services are on high alert following the recent tragic events in Moscow where terrorists carried out suicide bombings on the city’s underground train system.
