FIFA secretary general Jerome Valcke has warned Brazil they have just one month to prove they will be ready to host the 2014 World Cup.
FIFA is concerned by the lack of progress being made by the South American country with the world governing body calling into question Brazil’s ability to host the tournament.
"It is amazing that Brazil is already very late. I got a report on the status of the Brazilian stadiums and I have to say it is not very nice," Valcke said in May.
"The stadiums are the basic points we need to have for any World Cup. However in Brazil, for the time being, most of the deadlines have already been exceeded and we have to work on new deadlines.
"They are proving how difficult it is to hold a World Cup in Brazil, just as it was in South Africa. Brazil is not on the right path. This year there is a presidential election, so almost nothing will happen."
With the Olympics also scheduled to take place in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, Brazilian officials are facing a costly race with the $390 million overhaul of the world famous Maracana Stadium yet to be even started.
According to Rio’s state sports and tourism secretary Marcia Lins, work on the stadium will begin this summer and conclude in December 2012.
The capacity of the arena will increase form 82,238 to 90,000 ahead of the Confederations Cup in 2012.
