FIFA has given the green light for two joint bids for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup after formally approving the principle of co-hosting the tournament.
Spain and Portugal have entered a joint bid as well as the Netherlands and Belgium, despite question marks over whether FIFA would allow such a venture.
Japan and South Korea co-hosted the tournament in 2002 and the logistical and financial challenges of eight years ago had appeared to have made FIFA unwilling to sanction another such agreement.
Only last year, FIFA president Sepp Blatter said: “As long as we have single-country bids which provide all the necessary guarantees we will reject co-hosting bids.”
Now, FIFA has changed its tune and the latest statement released by the executive committee will have given those lining up a joint bid some hope for the future.
A FIFA statement read: “Regarding the bidding for the 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cups, the executive decided to formally approve the principle of co-hosting for this process, since the joint bids of Belgium/Holland and Spain/Portugal have been presented with only one Local Organising Committee in each case.”
