The decision to hold the Champions League final on a Saturday night appears to have backfired on UEFA president Michel Platini after research revealed viewing figures were dramatically reduced.
UEFA had hoped to attract more viewers by switching the final from a Wednesday to the weekend but TV Spors Markets, a SportBusiness Group publication, reports that fewer families were watching.
The game between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, failed to capture the imagination in France, while the UK posted its lowest viewing figures since 1998.
The cumulative free-to-air audience for the final in Barcelona was 36.9 million across the big five markets, down 18.5% on last year.
The 2009 final between Barcelona and Manchester United was a huge success for UEFA with the game attracting 45,347 million viewers compared to 39.226 million in 2007, 37.617 million in 2008, and 36.949 million this season.
