The National Football League (NFL) has agreed a licensing deal with online gaming company Quick Hit Inc.
The move means the NFL has teamed up with a rival to Electronic Arts Inc. who have produced “Madden NFL” on an exclusive basis since 2004.
The deal is the NFL’s first licensing agreement for an online game and so does not contravene the agreement with EA as that contract was for a console-based “action simulation.”
“There hasn’t really been a true football experience for a NFL fan who is looking for an alternative,” said Jeffrey Anderson, chief executive officer at Foxborough, Massachusetts- based Quick Hit.
“QUICKHIT football” is free to play online and makes money when players purchase add-on features.
The US market for purchases within online free-to-play games is estimated to increase from $836 million to $3.6 billion, according to Atul Bagga, a California-based industry analyst with ThinkEquity LLC.
EA Sports insists that the latest deal will have little impact on their relationship with the NFL with their “Madden” franchise having generated $3 billion.
“The NFL has been a great partner for nearly two decades, said David Tinson, a spokesman for Electronic Arts unit EA Sports. “This announcement has no impact on the relationship we have in place to create great NFL-branded products.”
