South African police fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters in Durban just hours after Germany’s thumping victory over Australia.
Hundreds of protesters descended on the stadium in the early hours of Monday morning to vent their fury over poor pay conditions.
Riot police, wearing body armour and helmets, chased protesters away from the stadium including stewards who had been on duty at the game just hours earlier.
"We were mounting a peaceful protest because they were not paying us what we expected and we were surprised that the police started charging at us. They fired teargas at us," said one of the workers, Sydney Nzoli.
Police stepped up their response after being targeted by bricks and rocks before finally managing to quell the protest.
