Retailers were hit hard last weekend after World Cup fever swept across the United Kingdom.
According to research carried out by Experian-owned company, Footfall, there was a 4.7% year-on-year drop with most shoppers staying home to prepare for England’s opening game with the USA.
Despite that setback, the high street is still showing signs of growth with the average performance having increased over the past five Saturdays by 3.5% from last year.
Meanwhile, Tesco and Sainsbury are both expected to reveal a slowdown in sales growth of 1.5%. over the past three months.
These figures could be reduced even further if the effect of January’s VAT rise is taken out.
Elsewhere, smaller supermarkets such as Aldi, Waitrose and Iceland have all enjoyed growth.
