FIFA gives fans a dressing down
 15/06/2010

FIFA has gone to war with fans determined to wear unofficial World Cup merchandise at matches in South Africa.

The Netherlands’ 2-0 win over Denmark was marred by the scene of 36 women being ejected from Soccer City for promoting Dutch beer.

The ladies were wearing orange dresses, known as Dutchy dresses, which came as part of a gift pack from Bavaria Beer which was sold in the build-up to the tournament.

FIFA has already confiscated several flags bearing no-World Cup sponsors in a bid to protect its current deal.

The likes of Adidas, Coca-Cola, Hyundai, McDonald’s, Emirates and Budweiser are all official partners and are keen to maintain a level of exclusivity.

More than 60% of FIFA’s 2007-10 revenue of $3.2 billion has come from TV rights and about 30% from commercial marketing.
