The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) has revealed that North Korea has secured the rights to air the FIFA World Cup.
North Korea had been accused of illegally televising the opening games of the tournament but John Barton, the ABU’s director of sport, insists a deal was signed just hours before last Friday’s deadline.
“The agreement to include North Korea came on Friday,” he told The Sport Briefing.
“The reason is obvious. The state of relations between the north and south is not good. FIFA acted quickly and responsibly to ensure coverage.”
The ABU currently provides broadcasting pictures of the World Cup to Uzbekistan, Laos, Kyrgyzstan, Timor Leste, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan.
