Nearly two thousand World Cups security guards have been made redundant after being told they are no longer needed.
Following two days of violent protests outside the Moses Mabhida stadium in Durban, security staff were told to hand in their orange jackets in exchange for one day’s pay.
Stallion Security, who provide stewards for the tournament, has confirmed that police will be used following the pay dispute with their staff.
Police were forced to use tear gas and rubber bullets after disgruntled stewards went on the rampage following Germany’s victory over Australia last Sunday.
Stallion will now hope to attract new recruits with the police only providing a temporary solution to the problems.
