A wage dispute with World Cup stewards caused yet more trouble on Thursday as police fired rubber bullets and stun grenades at protesters.
Disgruntled workers, who are seething at the level of pay being handed out by security firm Stallion, protested outside the firm’s office in Cape Town.
Seven people were arrested in the scuffles and police have been drafted into stadiums to provide security with stewards having gone on strike.
Police now provide protection at four venues round the country including the showpiece Soccer City stadium and Ellis Park in Johannesburg, and the newly-built arenas in Cape Town and Durban.
Police had already taken over in Port Elizabeth before the start of the tournament following a pay dispute between stewards and their employers.
