French sports minister Roselyne Bachelot believes it is "inevitable" that French Football Federation (FFF) head Jean-Pierre Escalettes will leave his post over the World Cup debacle.
Bachelot does not have the power to dismiss Escalettes – and said she would not do so even if it was her decision – but she hinted that his position had become untenable after France’s incredible implosion in South Africa.
Striker Nicolas Anelka was sent home after clashing with coach Raymond Domenech, which led the rest of the players to boycott a training session in protest. Domenech then dropped several players, including captain Patrice Evra, for France’s must-win game against South Africa – a match they lost 2-1 to finish bottom of Group A with just one point.
"The departure of Jean-Pierre Escalettes is not something I want but I find it inevitable," Bachelot said.
"The players have not received any remuneration, the coach is going [Domenech had already announced he was stepping down after the tournament] so the last part of this disaster is the federation."
Escalettes, however, has no plans to walk away. The 75-year-old, when asked if he intended to quit, said it was not in his nature.
