The British Government has unveiled plans to spend up to £10m of lottery funding on a schools’ Olympics.
Culture, media and sport secretary Jeremy Hunt and schools secretary Michael Gove announced the scheme, which will encourage schools to take part in a local league, on Monday (June 28). The most talented primary and secondary school athletes will go forward to county finals and then a national final to coincide with the 2012 London Olympics.
Critics of the plan claim it is little different from existing school sports events and comes at a time when budgets are being cut across the board in a bid to tackle the country’s burgeoning deficit.
But Hunt said: "Competitive sport – whether you win or lose – teaches young people great lessons for life. It encourages teamwork, dedication and striving to be the best that you can be.
"This will be a key part of our drive to leave a real lasting sports legacy from London's Games.”
