The London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) has announced plans to recruit up to 70,000 volunteers for the 2012 Games in what is being described as the UK’s biggest post-war volunteer recruitment campaign.
The volunteers will be known as ‘Games Makers’ and will be either ‘specialists’ – in areas such as medical services, sport or press operations – or ‘generalists’, with roles including spectator assistants, uniform distributors and ticket checkers.
LOCOG chairman Lord Coe said: “London 2012 needs brilliant volunteers to help us deliver a great Olympic and Paralympic Games.
“Our volunteers will be called Games Makers to reflect the important role they will play in staging the 2012 Games. The programme to find our Games Makers will launch on July 27, 2010 and I urge anyone who is interested to come to our website from that day onwards to find out everything they need to know about volunteering in 2012.”
Fast food giant McDonald’s, which spends more than £30m a year on training its 80,000-strong workforce, will help recruit and train the volunteers.
Coe added: “Providing good customer service to millions of people each day is core to McDonald's business, and the company has a proven track record in developing its own 80,000-strong workforce to thrive in a fast-paced, busy environment.
"This combination makes McDonald's uniquely placed to equip the London 2012 Games Makers with the skills needed to deliver an unforgettable experience to millions of visitors to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games."
