Bernie Ecclestone believes the Formula One Teams' Association (FOTA) has no place in the sport because the idea of teams working together is fundamentally flawed.
FOTA was formed in 2008 to give teams a united voice in F1’s decision-making processes.
But Ecclestone, F1’s commercial rights holder, told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “It [FOTA] will never work because it is made up of teams that fight against each other on the circuit. When the teams discuss the rules, everyone tries to benefit. The teams wanted to divide F1, but now they understand that it is good to give importance to the money that they get [from Formula One Management]. There is no space for FOTA."
In the same interview, Ecclestone said that Formula 1 could lose a team in 2011, despite a number of hopefuls lining up for the 13th grid slot.
"I would be glad," he added. "There is a long list of teams that want to be in Formula 1. Whether they have the ability and the resources is another story."
