Viewing figures soar for LeBron announcement
 13/07/2010

The Decision, the live announcement confirming where National Basketball Association (NBA) star LeBron James would be playing next season, was the highest-rated programme of the night on American television last week.

The 25-year-old small forward was an unrestricted free agent after his contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers expired and after months of speculation, James announced to the world last Thursday that he would be joining the Miami Heat next season.

Shown live on ESPN, The Decision peaked at a 9.6 overnight rating between 9.15-9.30pm.

James met with six teams before making his decision – the Heat, Cavaliers, New Jersey Nets, New York Knicks, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers which made it no surprise the top rated markets were Cleveland (26.0 rtg.), Columbus (14.2 rtg.), Miami (12.8 rtg.), Washington DC (11.9 rtg.), Raleigh (11.0 rtg.), Chicago (10.7 rtg.), and New York (10.4 rtg.).

The Decision posted a higher overnight rating than any NBA regular season or play-off game (leading into finals) across all networks during the 2009/10 season.
