Brazil’s budget watchdog has reportedly claimed that work on most of the venues for the 2014 football World Cup is "impressively late”.
The TCU, the country’s budget oversight council, made the observation in a report obtained by newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo.
It follows similar concerns expressed by Fifa earlier this year about the progress of work on everything from the stadiums to transport infrastructure and hotels.
An apparent lack of planning could lead the Brazilian Government to step in, Estado reported. The Sports Ministry has apparently received draft projects for just eight of the planned 48 works needed to host the tournament.
TCU councillor Valmir Campelo cited the example of the main stadium that was built for the Pan-American Games in 2007 and cost about eight times more than initially predicted, the paper said.
Brazil hosted the 1950 World Cup but the tournament has not been held in South America since Argentina staged it in 1978.
