Strong sales for 2012 Ryder Cup hospitality packages
 16/07/2010

PGA of America has sold 43 of 53 hospitality packages for the 2012 Ryder Cup after cutting prices by five per cent, it has emerged.

Michael Belot, director of the 2012 event, revealed that packages have been sold to companies such as PepsiCo since PGA of America began marketing them three months ago.

The organisation had hoped by this time to sell 15 to 20 of the packages, which cost between $150,000 and $500,000.

"If you go to an average tour event or another major championship, those commitments stack up extremely well," Belot said. "To sell 30-something of those packages would be considered very solid, and we're already north of 40 two years out."

Belot added that the weak economy was a factor when PGA of America offered five per cent price cuts to existing partners and firms with a presence at the Medinah Country Club, which will host the 2012 event. The returns were so strong that the offer, which expires on October 31, was extended to any interested groups.

"We weren't quite sure exactly what to expect," Belot continued. "We didn't want to go out and be too aggressive and put our heads in the sand. Instead, we wanted to acknowledge what was out there."
