Spain’s victory in the football World Cup has increased support for its bid to co-host the tournament in 2018 with neighbours Portugal, according to new research.
An IFM Sports Marketing Survey poll of more than 20,000 adults across Europe showed that the Iberian bid was the first choice of a third of adults in the so-called ‘Big Five’ countries – France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK.
England’s bid came in equal second place with 12 per cent of the vote alongside the joint Netherlands-Belgium bid.
The study also included the United States with 10,000 Americans surveyed where 21 per cent pledged their support for their home bid, only marginally ahead of Spain-Portugal (19 per cent).
