Indian sports minister MS Gill has slammed the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) for failing to attract leading sports stars to this year’s event in Delhi.
Top athletes such as Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell, as well as cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, have pulled out of the Games, which take place October.
Gill said: “The stadiums we have built are world class. It is sad that some of the leading sportspersons are not coming to the Delhi Commonwealth Games.
“It appears that for the Olympic Games, performance in continental events like the Asian Games and Europeans Championships are taken into account. Due to this, the sportspersons don’t attach the same importance to the Commonwealth Games.
“I want to tell [CGF chief Michael] Fennell: ‘Don’t bring your officials here, but bring stars like Bolt, Hoy and others with you’.”
