Bernie Ecclestone has threatened to axe the Monaco Grand Prix from the Formula 1 calendar because the famous street circuit “doesn’t pay enough”.

As the traditional heartland of F1, Europe stages the most races but its venues pay the lowest promotional fees, with Monaco believed to pay nothing at all.

"The Europeans are going to have to pay more money or we will have to go somewhere else," said Ecclestone. "We can do without Monaco – they don't pay enough.”
