Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has pulled out of the running to become the president of the German Football League (DFL).

Hoeness only recently declared his intention run against incumbent Dr Reinhard Rauball.

However, Hoeness said in a statement: "After intense consultation with my family at the weekend, I have reached the decision that I will not be standing for election to the position of DFL president. I have informed the league president Dr Reinhard Rauball of my decision personally by telephone."

Instead, Bayern have put forward the name of their vice-chairman, Karl Hopfner, for a place on the DFL board "so that Bayern Munich continues to be represented in the DFL".

Rauball, who is also president of Bayern's Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund, is now the only candidate for the position at next month's election and will be expected to be re-elected with Schalke president Peter Peters continuing as vice-president.
