Uefa general secretary Gianni Infantino has hailed the Champions League as "the best and most challenging club competition in the world".
Speaking after the third qualifying round draw ceremony in Nyon, Infantino claimed the success of European players at this summer’s World Cup highlighted the strength of the European game as a whole.
Spain won the tournament in South Africa after beating Holland in the final, with Germany coming third.
And Infantino said: "All of their players are on permanent display in our competitions, but this was the case of many players from other teams, including non-Europeans, too. It is a major achievement and a big source of satisfaction – which tells the world how high the level of European club football is.
"We know how difficult it is to make it to the group stage of the Uefa Champions League, which is widely acclaimed as the best and most challenging club competition in the world. Clubs, players, coaches and supporters all want to be in it.”
