British Tennis is set to become the 28th sport to submit itself to scrutiny by UK Sport in the build up to the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
The Lawn Tennis Association has approached the body responsible for overseeing the majority of the country's Olympic sports in an attempt to boost its chances of success ahead of London 2012.
UK Sport confirmed the news at its Mission 2012 progress briefing on Tuesday (July 20) as it announced British Olympic and Paralympic sports had never been better placed to succeed with just over two years to go before the Games.
Outgoing chief executive John Steele said: "Tennis have approached us and, at the next quarterly, there will be a submission from tennis, and they will have gone through the process that other Olympic sports go through.
"There's no funding connected with that but they've approached us and I think it demonstrates that this isn't about big stick and how you spend your money, it's about sharing performance best practice.
"It's about everyone being open and honest about where they think they are, what challenges need to be satisfied, and how we can learn from each other.
"And that's why tennis have now said: 'We want to be in the Mission 2012 process – profiling, talking to you about how we can move forward'."
