Bookmaker William Hill has said that strong betting on this summer’s football World Cup helped offset losses it suffered at Royal Ascot.
It revealed that the World Cup "proved to be one of the best for bookmakers in 40 years", although the Royal Ascot meeting was its "worst ever".
William Hill said that it had seen strong growth in its online business and from gaming machines, and is predicting earnings of about £135m for the first half of 2010.
The World Cup proved profitable for bookmakers, as the Spanish team's opening loss to Switzerland deterred some punters. Bookies also benefited from patriotic bets on England.
