The South Korean Government has announced new investment plans to develop winter sports facilities and help winter athletes improve their performance.
The Korean Olympic Committee, supported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, is investing 1.2bn South Korean Won (about US$1m) to operate a new training centre in PyeongChang for athletes, and provide off-season training opportunities for snow sports, including skiing, biathlon, bobsleigh and skeleton.
The new training centre, which will accommodate 500 athletes, will open at Gangwon Province's Alpensia Resort this summer, and also from December to March 2011.
The Alpensia Resort is one of the main Olympic clusters in PyeongChang's bid for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games and would be the venue for the Olympic Village, as well as for several events.
PyeongChang 2018 chairman and chief executive Yang-Ho Cho said: "We thank the Government for this significant investment which will improve our winter sports facilities, help to enhance our athlete's performance, and encourage greater interest and participation in winter sports in Korea and Asia.”
PyeongChang is competing against Annecy and Munich for the right to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
