Team 2012 has launched a new initiative designed to raise £15m to support the development of athletes ahead of the Olympics in London.
The joint venture is being run by the British Olympic Association, the British Paralympic Association, UK Sport and organising committee LOCOG, backed by National Lottery and Government funding.
The scheme allows small and medium businesses to invest £20,000 into the development of potential competitors ahead of the Games in two years' time.
Team 2012 is currently halfway towards its fundraising target of £25m and the new project, named Our Team 2012, could add another £15m.
Sports and Olympics minister Hugh Robertson said: "Sports funding has always come from a mixture of exchequer, lottery and private sources.
"As Government, we have committed substantial exchequer and lottery funding for our elite athletes in the run up to 2012 but it has never been more important, given the difficult economic situation we're in, to have business behind our athletes.
"Supporting the Olympics is not just something big multi-nationals can do – it is within easy reach of every small and medium business in the UK and I'd encourage as many as possible to get involved."
It is planned that a total of 750 businesses will invest in return for use of the logo, tickets for pre-Olympic events and access to networking events.
British Olympic Association chief executive Andy Hunt added: "With the help of Our Team 2012, British athletes will aim to deliver the inspirational performances that will unite the nation with pride and excitement in two years time."
