Formula 1 is enjoying a resurgence in Germany with viewing figures at a three-year high, according to Formula One Management’s 2010 mid-season report.
The return of Michael Schumacher and the success of compatriot Sebastian Vettel looks to have been a catalyst for increased viewing figures across the board.
Commercial television station RTL’s audience for the 2010 season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix was almost twice as large as the same event in 2009, with this year’s race watched by up to 11.5 million viewers, averaging out at 10.5 million.
The figures, which did not include last weekend’s German Grand Prix, showed that nine of the first 10 races so far achieved a larger TV audience than the corresponding event in 2009, with an average improvement of 27 per cent.
The United Kingdom market also showed signs of improvement. The Bahrain Grand Prix (5.4 million viewers) and Canadian Grand Prix (5.4 million) proved particularly strong events, while the mid-season report praised the BBC’s innovative approach to broadcasting and described it as “some of the most comprehensive in-depth Formula One coverage available globally”.
